Scholarships and Grants for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Students

Becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner is no easy feat. First, you must become a registered nurse, which requires an associate’s degree (ASN) or a bachelor’s degree (BSN). Then, you must earn your master’s degree, either through a typical one- to two-year program or through an RN-to-MSN program if you have just an associate’s degree, which allows you to earn your bachelor’s degree along the way. Over the next few years, most states will also be requiring nurse practitioners in most fields to earn a doctorate. While this isn’t as much schooling as you’d need to become a doctor in a neonatal unit, it still is several years of college…and all those semesters can get rather expensive. Luckily, scholarships and grants are readily available for nurses.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students based on merit (such as good grades) or a certain talent. they’re most commonly available directly from colleges, but outside organizations, companies, and government departments also offer scholarships for nurses. Some sources of this kind of money for colleges include the following:

  • Florida Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners
  • Foundation for Neonatal Research and Education
  • March of Dimes
  • National Association of Neonatal Nurses
  • National Health Service Corps
  • Nurse Practitioner Health Association
  • Tylenol

Organizations and businesses in your local community might also be offering scholarships, especially to high school students taking the first steps to become neonatal nurse practitioners. Your guidance counselor can help you find options local to you that would be good fits for your abilities and monetary needs. There are also more general scholarships available for students, which are given regardless of field of study, as well as fellowships, which are similar to scholarships and most commonly available from graduate students.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Grants

Like scholarships, grants don’t have to be repaid when you graduate. This form of money is available based on need rather than merit, so even if you don’t have perfect grades or strong essay writing skills, you can apply. If you’re an undergraduate student entering an ASN or BSN program, you can apply for the federal Pell Grant, which is available to all students whose families meet financial qualifications. Additional, grants are available for nurses at all levels from the following sources:

  • Academy of Neonatal Nursing
  • Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nursing
  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
